Job description

Crisis Group is looking for a senior staff member to be the main advocate for our analysis and policy ideas at the United Nations. The successful candidate will coordinate our interactions with the UN and member states’ missions in New York; draft relevant reports and other pieces on the UN and international affairs and conflict prevention more broadly; help develop Crisis Group’s UN-related policies, develop and maintain a network of contacts within the UN system and permanent missions; and otherwise act as our primary interface with the UN. We are looking for someone already respected at the UN to amplify the work of our field experts and promote our main advocacy lines to policy-makers in New York.


Specific responsibilities:

  • Works with key policy-makers in the UN Secretariat, the Security Council and influential permanent missions to build broad-based support for Crisis Group policy positions and recommendations on country-specific, regional and thematic issues, in coordination with the President and Chief Policy Officer; develops and maintains an advocacy network with UN officials, NGOs, and diplomats at all levels within the UN system;

  • Leads Crisis Group’s research and advocacy activities at the UN; monitors and analyses developments, particularly in the Security Council and Secretariat; facilitates the flow of information between New York and program staff.

  • Oversees the work of the Senior UN Analyst in providing detailed analyses of developments at UNHQ, internal Secretariat and Security Council dynamics, advocacy opportunities, and potential policy outcomes to ensure internal awareness and adequate reflection of UN perspectives in Crisis Group publications;

  • Ensures that visits from Crisis Group experts to the UN and permanent missions are well coordinated and that colleagues see necessarily policy-makers;

  • Drafts reports and other written pieces on the UN, international affairs and conflict prevention and management, in consultation with the President and Chief of Policy;

  • Supports Crisis Group's fundraising efforts by periodically meeting with private donors and cultivating relationships with the UN missions of Crisis Group's donor governments, with the support of the development team.

  • At least ten years of experience in conflict prevention and resolution, operating at senior levels in government, non-governmental organisations or multilateral institutions;
  • Excellent knowledge of and access within the UN system; and understanding of the UN’s relationships with regional organisations;

  • Demonstrated writing, editing and analytical skills and ability to formulate well-targeted policy recommendations (application may include a written test);

  • Extensive international experience, with broad knowledge of Crisis Group’s priority regions, and sensitivity toward the specificity of each conflict; and

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills, and a capacity for effective teamwork across globally-distributed offices.
