Intern, Conflict Tracking & Early Warning Unit

Role:

International Crisis Group is offering the opportunity to work with a small and dedicated Conflict Tracking & Early Warning team to help compile CrisisWatch, Crisis Group’s global conflict tracker, assist in the unit’s horizon scanning projects, and support the research needs of the Global Issues and Institutions programme (of which the Conflict Tracking & Early Warning unit is a part). In this internship you will discover how Crisis Group approaches, produces and conveys research and early warning on deadly conflict in order to prevent wars and shape policies that will build a more peaceful world.

This full-time, six-month internship position is unpaid and will start in mid-November. The candidate will be preferably based in either Brussels or London where Crisis Group has an office.

The internship position is available exclusively to students participating in academic or sponsored programs, e.g. students who can integrate the internship into their academic curriculum for credit or those who have secured external funding, such as a grant or scholarship, to support them during the internship.

Responsibilities:

• Assisting the Conflict Tracking & Early Warning Unit in preparing and publishing our monthly CrisisWatch conflict tracker, a tool designed to help decision-makers prevent deadly violence by keeping them up-to-date with developments in over 70 conflicts and crises, identifying trends and alerting them to risks of escalation and opportunities to advance peace;

• Assisting in the preparation of Horizon Scanning briefings with policymakers;

• Researching and drafting background materials on particular conflicts, global/cross-cutting issues and geopolitical trends;

• Maintaining and updating the Conflict Tracking & Early Warning unit’s databases;

• Attending meetings and other events (online or face-to-face) and keeping minutes as appropriate;

• Carrying out administrative duties relevant to the unit’s work.

Qualifications include:

• English language skills at native-speaker or proficiency level;

• Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of conflict, peace and security issues;

• Strong writing skills;

• Strong organisational skills with a keen eye for detail;

• Professional experience within an international relations environment/NGO desirable; and

• Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office and online research tools.

The successful candidate will gain insight into Crisis Group’s core work of providing independent research and analysis on deadly conflict.
