Purpose of the role:
Crisis Group is looking for a project director to lead on its gender workstream to conduct research on gender and conflict-related issues, advise Crisis Group's leadership and experts across the organisation on gender aspects of conflict, further integrate gender analysis across Crisis Group's work and write reports and other materials. Provide expert advice to Crisis Group's leadership and regional Program staff on field-based, gendered conflict analysis at all stages of the research, policy development and publication drafting process, including the drafting of talking points, speeches or other materials for Policy leadership on Gender and Conflict;
Review Crisis Group concept notes, reports and other outputs to help ensure gender dimensions are incorporated across relevant Crisis Group analysis, policy prescriptions and advocacy; help shape Crisis Group’s annual work plans accordingly;
Conduct field-based and desk research on specialised work concerning “Gender, Peace and Security”, particularly the different roles and agencies of women in conflict, and provide written analyses, for publication by the project;
Train Program staff in WPS and gender-sensitive and gender-transformational policy analysis on an ongoing and/as needed basis;
Shape and co-direct regional research outputs on gender-related themes, oversee co-direct program consultants, conduct interviews and research for program staff, draft sections of and edit program-led written outputs, including reports and opeds; organise and promote launch events in coordination with the Communications team;
Lead the Women’s Alliance for Peace alongside the Development team, engage regularly with Alliance members/donors, curate and oversee bi-monthly events, draft proposals for expanded funding, and participate in Alliance networking with the aim of securing further funding.
Provide advice to the Development team on how to integrate Gender into funding proposals, meet and pitch to prospective funders, and draft and review pitch proposals.
Plan and participate in Crisis Calls for board meetings.
Plan and conduct advocacy meetings with policy-makers, government and UN officials, and provide briefings as and when needed.
Coordinate the work and outputs of Gender Fellows supported by the Women’s Alliance for Peace, as they embed with programs and conduct research and produce reports on subjects selected by the Alliance.
Draft reports, briefing papers and other written products setting out research findings and policy recommendations for publication in a concise and clear fashion.
Conduct high-level media outreach to place opeds and secure interviews in prominent media outlets and build a mainstream audience for the Project’s profile and perspectives. Participate in videos and draft materials for communications outputs for launches. Draft non-conventional communications materials that use narrative and multimedia storytelling to engage a wider audience.
Represent Crisis Group at high-level government, UN, and policy events, panels, workshops, and meetings.
Oversee the work of a team including a Senior Analyst and consultants.
Top notch drafting skills in English; strong research skills; a track record of rigorous analysis and ability to question conventional wisdom, and a proven ability to propose, argue and discuss policy options.
A post-graduate degree in international relations, gender studies, political science, journalism, sociology or equivalent through experience.
Around ten years professional experience in government, academia, international organisations, NGOs or journalism.
Demonstrated understanding of the gender dimensions of armed conflict and conflict prevention including field experience in fragile or conflict-affected states.
Fluency in English; knowledge of French and/or Spanish and Arabic advantageous.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation skills, and a strong capacity for effective teamwork.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
