Job description

The International Crisis Group is seeking a voluntary intern to work for six months with the Gender and Conflict Project, starting in early October 2024. This unpaid internship will be part-time (50-75%, i.e., 2½-3½ days per week, to be agreed upon). The position can be based in either Brussels or New York, and there is some flexibility regarding the exact schedule and time spent at the office.

The internship would suit candidates with an ongoing or recent degree in international relations, conflict studies, political science, or a similar field, with a demonstrated interest in gender-related themes. We are looking for a candidate who meets one (or both) of the following criteria:

  1. Needs to complete an internship to fulfil the requirements for their degree.

  2. Has secured a scholarship to support them financially during the internship.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and draft background materials on conflict issues and policy developments for the Gender and Conflict Senior Analyst and Project Director;

  • Support the Gender Project’s work to mainstream a gender perspective across Crisis Group conflict analysis and policy recommendations on a wide range of conflicts;

  • Take the lead on the Gender Project’s monitoring and evaluation efforts by recording impact evidence and tracking how Crisis Group publications integrate a gender perspective;

  • Assist with the drafting of social media content for the Project;

  • Carry out administrative tasks for the Gender Project;

  • Carry out other tasks according to Gender Project needs.

Job requirements

Requirements:

  • An ongoing or recent degree in international relations, conflict studies, political science or similar;

  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of gender and conflict / gender, peace and security;

  • Strong writing and research skills;

  • Highly organised and able to pay close attention to detail;

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office and online research tools;

  • Fluent in spoken and written English, knowledge of French or Spanish an asset;

  • Authorization to be based in Brussels or New York.
