Crisis Group is offering an exciting opportunity to learn about multilateral diplomacy and get a first-hand understanding about how a policy organisation conducts advocacy at the United Nations. In this full-time volunteer opportunity, you will be following developments at the UN Security Council, contributing to Crisis Group’s engagement with UN agencies and member states, and assisting the UN team on research projects. This is a full-time volunteer position for six months starting August 2023.
We offer you learning on the job through:
Tracking developments at the UN Security Council particularly regarding conflicts that are relevant to Crisis Group's work;
Monitoring and summarising official documents including relevant reports by the Secretary-General, Security Council resolutions, and statements;
Contributing to research and writing projects on various topics as necessary and be asked to attend meetings and events as a representative of the organisation;
Participating in Crisis Group events and meetings (both virtual and in person when possible) and providing note-taking support.
This internship will suit anyone interested in familiarising themselves with the UN system with a particular focus on the Security Council and the UN agencies working on political affairs and peace operations. Candidates will need strong command of English with French a preferable asset, good writing skills and to enjoy working in a fast-paced, multinational team. This volunteer position is unpaid, but Crisis Group will contribute towards costs for lunch and daily transport.
Qualifications include:
Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in international relations or a similar subject;
Understanding of the United Nations system, preferably with experience working or interning within the UN;
Excellent verbal and written command of English (other language proficiency a plus) and preferably French;
Good research and note taking skills;
Knowledge of Crisis Group reports helpful;
Strong administrative skills;
Good organisational skills, self-motivation and flexible;
Authorization to work in the United States.
