Crisis Group is offering an exciting opportunity to experience first-hand how a policy organisation conducts advocacy in Washington, DC. Among other duties, you will be tracking foreign policy developments in Congress, the State Department, Department of Defense, and USAID and contributing to Crisis Group’s engagement in Washington, D.C. This is a full-time volunteer position for six-months starting at the beginning of October 2023.
We offer you learning on the job through:
Tracking US government policy developments regarding conflicts that are relevant to Crisis Group's work;
Monitoring and summarising official US government documents, statements, and press releases;
Assisting with organisational processes, such as schedule and contact database management;
Contributing to research and writing projects on various topics as necessary;
Attending meetings, events, and Congressional Hearings with or on behalf of Crisis Group staff;
Participating in Crisis Group meetings and providing note-taking support.
This volunteer position will suit anyone interested in familiarising themselves with the United States government with a particular focus on international peace and security. Candidates must have a strong written and verbal command of English, good organisational skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications include:
Undergraduate degree in international relations, conflict studies, political science or a similar subject;
Understanding of the government system in DC, preferably with experience working or interning in Congress or at the State Department;
Excellent verbal and written command of English;
Good research and note taking skills;
Knowledge of Crisis Group reports helpful;
Strong administrative skills;
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and other internet applications;
Good organisational skills, self-motivated and flexible;
Must be available 40 hours per week for a period of six months;
Authorization to work in the United States;
Must be located in Washington, DC. and willing to come into the office part-time.
